a student to be able to graduate from high school. It is offered during the
sophomore year to all students and must be repeated if not passed. It is a
semester course (1/2 credit) in during this course of study the students will
be introduced to the history of the U.S. government. Students begin with our
English heritage and how our colonial experiences led to the American
Revolution and the formation of the Articles of Confederation. The course will
continue with the study of the Constitution, its underlying principles, the
Bill Of Rights, and the three branches of government. The course will conclude
with the Washington Administration and the implementation of the federal
government.
U.S. History I will begin with the start of the 2nd
semester and the student could earn a ½ credit in Social Studies. This
course will focus on the events which took place from the Adams administration
to the Civil War. Particular attention will be paid to AmericaÕs foreign
conflicts during this period and relevant Supreme Court cases which helped to
shape later events. Significant domestic issues leading to the Civil War will
also form a significant part of the curriculum.
In both the Civics and the U.S. History courses students will be given the opportunity to practice their research and writing skills.
