The Alma Exley Scholarship Program
Deadline: October 31 - Annually

Scholarships are awarded to persons of color who are enrolled in a teacher-preparation program at a college or university in Connecticut. Those eligible include African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans.

Students interested in applying for a scholarship should obtain an application form and brochure in September from the dean or director of the teacher-preparation program in which they are enrolled.

Applications and letters of reference must be post-marked by October 31.

A selection committee that includes respected educators from across the state reviews the applications and recommends the scholarship recipients to the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain,
based on criteria established by the committee.

One scholarship is awarded to a person of color who has been admitted to a traditional teacher-preparation program at a college or university in Connecticut.

A second scholarship is awarded to a person of color in the Alternate Route to Certification (ARC) program sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education.

ABOUT ALMA:

Alma Exley was a dedicated, caring educator who touched many people from all walks of life. She made a lasting contribution as a teacher, a school board member, and a 15-year career professional
at the Connecticut Department of Education.

Before she died of breast cancer on March 6, 1995, at the age of 52, Alma envisioned a scholarship program as a way to carry on her commitment to recruiting and mentoring students of color
who would become teachers.

Alma was committed to helping students and future teachers overcome the effects of discrimination and inequality of opportunity. She was widely respected for her work in expanding opportunities for students and for her leadership in teacher education and professional recognition and development programs. Children were central to her life, as a mother, a friend and an educator. She believed that nurturing
the next generation was our most important responsibility.

The Alma Exley Scholarship Program is carrying on that legacy.

Who is Dale E. Fridell?

Dale Fridell was the grandfather of StraightForward Media CEO Josh Barsch. Dale was born in 1918 on a family farm in Denton, Kansas. He had seven brothers and sisters and grew knowing that for the family to run smoothly, everyone had to do their part. He carried that ethic with him his entire life, recognizing that when each of us makes a contribution, whether in a family, the work place or the world, all of us benefit.

Dale served his country for seven years during World War II. College wasn’t an option for him, but he would have done well at it, as he did in all things he set his mind to. He was married and raised a family and contributed to society in a number of ways; running a service station/café with his wife, participating in Boy Scouts with his son and serving in many community organizations with his family and friends.

Dale was a man who didn’t have to be asked to help out; he was always one step ahead in offering his assistance. In his later years, he developed Alzheimer’s disease, but he fought to retain his dignity until he couldn’t fight any longer. He left his wife, children and grandchildren a legacy of honesty, loving and kindness. It's because of this that the Dale E. Fridell Scholarship was created in his memory.
