The Milton
Fisher Scholarship for Innovative and Creativity
Managed by: The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven
Deadline: June 1
The Renée B. Fisher Foundation has established this scholarship
program in memory of Milton Fisher, whose life was marked by a passion
for innovative and creative problem solving that extended across a broad
range of fields of endeavor. Mr. Fisher was also passionate about encouraging
others to take the initiative in finding innovative and creative solutions
to the problems around them, in their personal and professional lives
and in the lives of their families and communities.
This scholarship
is not a traditional scholarship focused on rewarding academic achievement
and financial need. Its specific goal is to reward and encourage
innovative and creative problem solving.
We are looking for:
students who have solved artistic, scientific, or technical problems
in new or unusual ways;
students who have come up with distinctive solutions to problems faced
by their schools, communities, or families.
The Scholarship
aims to honor these students and to help make their higher education goals
more accessible.
Eligible applicants to the Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and
Creativity must satisfy these two conditions:
Applicant must be
a high school junior, or
a high school senior, or
any person entering an undergraduate degree program* in the fall
after the application deadline or the following spring, or
a student in the first year of an undergraduate
degree program*.
And applicant must be
a Connecticut resident (who can choose an institution of higher
education either in Connecticut or elsewhere), or
a student currently attending or planning
to attend a Connecticut educational institution
*The scholarship
can be applied to any “undergraduate degree program,” which
is defined as any post-secondary, undergraduate degree program at an accredited
college, university, vocational school, or technical school.
Fridell Scholarship News: Due to the continuing number of outstanding
applications we receive, StraightForward Media has expanded the Fridell
Scholarship. We've increased the scholarship amount to $1,000, and we
now offer the Fridell Scholarship four times annually.
The Dale E. Fridell Memorial Scholarship, and it's open to anyone
currently attending or aspiring to attend a university, college, trade
school, technical institute, vocational training or other post-secondary
education program.
In addition, eligible students may not have already been receiving or
awarded a full-tuition scholarship or waiver from another source. International
students are welcome to apply.
Dale Fridell was the grandfather of StraightForward Media CEO Josh Barsch.
Dale was born in 1918 on a family farm in Denton, Kansas. He had seven
brothers and sisters and grew knowing that for the family to run smoothly,
everyone had to do their part. He carried that ethic with him his entire
life, recognizing that when each of us makes a contribution, whether in
a family, the work place or the world, all of us benefit.
Dale served his country for seven years during World
War II. College wasn’t an option for him, but he would have done
well at it, as he did in all things he set his mind to. He was married
and raised a family and contributed to society in a number of ways; running
a service station/café with his wife, participating in Boy Scouts
with his son and serving in many community organizations with his family
and friends.
Dale was a man who didn’t have to be asked to help
out; he was always one step ahead in offering his assistance. In his later
years, he developed Alzheimer’s disease, but he fought to retain
his dignity until he couldn’t fight any longer. He left his wife,
children and grandchildren a legacy of honesty, loving and kindness. It's
because of this that the Dale E. Fridell Scholarship was created in his
memory.
